Our common life as a faith community begins with our worship together, which is our center point, but we also understand that real spiritual growth necessarily involves intentional faith formation. If we are to really grow spiritually, as individuals and as a faith community, we must do more than just worship together.
In his first letter to the Corinthians addressing the division that existed among the Christians in Corinth, Paul makes a crucial point about the process of spiritual growth. While emphasizing that it is ultimately God who brings about real spiritual growth, Paul, using agricultural metaphor, also acknowledges the importance of our role as seed-sowers and plant-waterers. The photosynthetic process is what ultimately brings about the growth of a plant, but human efforts of planting and cultivation are required to facilitate the process. So it is with spiritual growth.
